How does it work?

City Bureau recruits and provides competitive stipends to journalists at all skill levels to mentor one another in a collaborative learning process, with community input every step of the way. We investigate issues with wide-ranging impact on people living in the South and West Sides of Chicago: including education, housing, environmentalism, economic and urban development, criminal justice and politics.

FELLOWS: 
professional journalists with experience in community-centric journalism and Experience with civic issues.

REPORTERS: 
emerging journalists with some formal training and a thirst for professional experience.

YOUTH MEDIA: 
High school or college age media-makers with an interest in storytelling and civic engagement.


City Bureau gives participants essential training and experience to become media professionals:

• On-the-job training, from generating story ideas to writing and editing

• Understanding of the 21st century media landscape

• Published clips in mainstream outlets

• Opportunities to pursue alternative storytelling skills
