After a hotly contested 14-way mayoral race in the general election, voters elected former prosecutor and Police Board president Lori Lightfoot in the April 2 runoff. Lightfoot overwhelmingly defeated Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle (73.7% vs. 26.3%) in a historic race that resulted in Chicago's first Black woman and openly gay mayor.

In one of the few mayoral races in recent memory without a clear front-runner, candidates Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle led the 14-candidate field and are heading to a runoff election for mayor in April. (In Chicago’s runoff system, if no candidate receives a majority of votes, the top two vote-getters face each other again.) At the ward level, several incumbent aldermen lost their seats to political newcomers and 14 more races—plus the city treasurer’s spot—will head to a runoff election. Several wards, like the 20th and 25th, saw crowded fields where a longtime incumbent was taken out of the running due to legal woes.
