What is a community of practice? Join us this month as we explore this type of group learning.

What do apprenticeships, twelve-step groups and online message boards have in common? They’re all examples of a “community of practice”—a group of people who share a concern or passion and learn from one another through conversation and skill sharing. This month at the Public Newsroom, we’re exploring this idea. Together, we’ll discuss: What does a healthy community of practice feel like? What are the steps to build one and how do you sustain it?

To ground the conversation, we’re joined by Lila Mills of NeighborUp, a Cleveland-based civic organization (and the homebase of the Cleveland Documenters program) that’s cultivating their own community of practice since 2012. We’ll also share how the Chicago Documenters team encourages social learning through a series of participant-led webchats. Your input will be especially important as City Bureau considers how to build a community of practice within our own network.
