This Chicago Documenters Budget Training is an informative session designed to help participants understand how the City of Chicago develops, debates, and adopts its annual budget. We do this with the purpose of documenting the budget process effectively.
The training explains the city’s budget process step-by-step. From when the Mayor’s Office crafts the proposed budget, to City Council committee hearings, public input opportunities, amendments, and the final vote (typically by mid-November). It highlights how residents can track decisions that impact city services, taxes, and priorities.
This training equips Documenters with the knowledge they need to cover budget-related meetings held from late October through December, when most hearings and deliberations take place.
By breaking down financial information into clear, understandable terms, this session empowers participants to follow budget discussions, ask informed questions, and share key details with their communities.
