Pride month may be over, but queer Chicagoans make news all year round. So how are local outlets reporting on issues affecting our queer communities, and what kind of coverage do LGBTQ+ folks want to see?

That’s what we’ll be exploring this month at the Public Newsroom. We’re joined by Chicago Reader reporter Adam Rhodes, who has written about racism in Boystown and an IL law that criminalizes HIV, and multidisciplinary artist Ireashia Bennett, whose work often explores the intersection of Black and queer identity.

Together, we’ll discuss best practices for newsrooms, highlight the ways queer Chicagoans shape narrative outside of traditional outlets, and ask you: what kind of queer stories do you want to see told in and about Chicago? For queer South and West Siders, this is an invitation to imagine what locally responsive, actionable coverage means to you.
