Friends and colleagues,
It is with deep gratitude and appreciation that I share the news that my time as Executive Director of City Bureau has come to a close.
When I joined City Bureau, I never could have imagined the journey that awaited me and the industry that welcomed me with open arms. From Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles; New York to Miami and everywhere in between I’ve been embraced by so many wonderful partners with a shared mission of reimagining our democracy and producing trusted local news.
I feel so honored to have been trusted to lead City Bureau and I’m incredibly proud of the work we accomplished together. In just a short time we expanded the Documenters Network to 22 cities, won a Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting with the Invisible Institute, raised an additional $3M in new funding, and received ARPA funding to lead Cook County’s Digital Equity grantmaking! While we have accomplished a lot, there is still more work to do. I can say with conviction that City Bureau’s work has never been more urgent. I’m proud of the strides we made during my tenure and confident that the team will carry the work forward with dedication and care.
While this chapter is closing, the mission remains in my heart. I’m turning the page with clarity, energy, and rolled up sleeves. I am excited about where life’s next adventure will take me and look forward to continuing this work.
Thank you to everyone who has walked alongside me on this journey — your support, partnership, trust, and belief in what’s possible have meant the world.
I can’t wait to see what we build next!
Forward Together,
Morgan Malone
