No matter where you live, extreme weather can hit your area and change your life. In this four-session workshop series, participants will adapt Grist’s Disaster 101 toolkit — a comprehensive guide about prep, response and recovery — to their local contexts and to other crisis situations, including finding accurate information, identifying and interacting with local agencies, and strengthening community networks to be more resilient. Grist will also host office hours in between workshops to assist participants in creating their toolkits and making communication plans. Participants who attend all the workshops in this series will receive a special badge on Documenters.org.
In this workshop, we will share resources created over the last two sessions with each other, and decide how they will be shared at a hyperlocal level. This could be in print through canvassing, online through social media and news outlets, or through phonebanking (or maybe all three!) We’ll start to look ahead to long-term recovery, including new resources to add, local and federal climate policies that could protect your community and environment, and how to build out a local resilience hub. You’ll hear from Katie Myers, a Grist/Blue Ridge Public Radio reporter who has lived and reported through two historic flooding events in Appalachia. This is the third workshop in a four-session series with Grist.
